This month we will discuss how levering the power of the food sector by integrating capital investments in area food businesses, is a path to grow community health and economic resilience. We will also learn about a burgeoning collective in Camden, New Jersey which is integrating local resources to not support local food businesses, but catalyze broader community and regional resilience. Before the Covid-19 pandemic began, tourism was responsible for approximately 10% of the world’s GDP, 10% of jobs, and 10% of carbon emissions. These numbers make clear that the industry is an incredibly important lever to pull to achieve meaningful impact. In short, if we care about racial equity, women’s empowerment, equitable economic opportunities, poverty reduction, or climate change, we should care about the tourism industry. The past year’s shutdowns have only increased urgency to act. This virtual event will bring global and Philadelphia-based experts and entrepreneurs together to provide an update on current realities, introduce new opportunities for impact, and inspire action.

As a leading hub for the impact investing movement nationally, Philadelphia has now attracted the attention of members of the entertainment community. BrickzCity, led by founder Gail Leibowitz, is developing a creative campus, at the Ink Factory in North Philadelphia, that consists of an innovation studio for TV, film, music, art, fashion, gaming and tech.

Although the Philadelphia region is a leading hub for the impact investing movement nationally, it can be challenging to identify and evaluate local impact investment opportunities for those who want to drive outcomes in their own backyard. That's especially true for those who are still finding their way in aligning their financial assets with their values. Please join us for a discussion with investors that have experience using “local” as an impact investment lens.

Racial inequities in the U.S. exist across all sectors, but nowhere are these inequities more prevalent than in the money management industry. Of the $70 trillion global financial assets under management across mutual funds, hedge funds, real estate, and private equity, fewer than 1.3% are managed by women and people of color. Our program will focus on the opportunities for investing in and with black/brown owned businesses and money management firms in the United States, with a particular attention to those in the Greater Philadelphia region. Let’s learn how we can move money and services to these firms.

The U.S. criminal justice system directly impacts 6.6 million people costing more than $80 billion per year. This profoundly broken system is marred by racial disparities, extractive business practices, and misaligned incentives. More than 4,000 corporations profit from mass incarceration through predatory pricing, prison labor, and the private prison industry. But the opportunity exists to find highly innovative private sector business models that address the injustices of mass incarceration, poised for the ethical disruption of the criminal justice system.

While donors receive the tax deduction immediately upon contributing to DAFs, they can take as long as they wish to recommend gifts. This reality often deprives charities of the immediate use of the funds especially in times of need. With the growing popularity of DAFs, this may be the time to begin thinking of the alignment of the corpus of these funds to their grant-making mission.
